Short answer: verify three gates before booking travel
A work-permit grant and permission to enter are connected, but they are not the same evidence check. Before flying, confirm what WORC granted and any conditions, what Customs and Border Control expects this traveller to show, and which employer, medical, insurance, or arrival tasks have firm dates. CBC says every arriving person must produce a passport or other valid identity and nationality or residence document, and that some nationalities require a visa.
- Save the issued grant or approval notification in its original form, but ask the employer, WORC, or CBC which evidence must be shown for your exact journey.
- Check passport validity and the current CBC visa-required list for every traveller, including children and dependants.
- CBC's visa list describes exemptions for a person authorised by a work permit and a person named as a dependant; confirm that your issued evidence supports the exemption before relying on it.
- Do not treat flights, a lease start, school deposits, or an employment start date as fixed until the three gates are reconciled in writing.
The approval-to-arrival timeline in order
Every grant can carry different people, conditions, and follow-up tasks. Work through the sequence in order so a status assumption, visa question, conditional medical, or insurance gap does not collide with travel.
| Step | What to confirm | Evidence to file |
|---|---|---|
| Grant received | Permit type, sponsor, occupation, named people, dates, conditions, and any unresolved item. | Original notification plus a written owner and deadline for every condition. |
| Entry position checked | Passport or travel document, visa requirement or precise exemption basis, and evidence for each traveller. | Current CBC pages plus case-specific written confirmation where the position is unclear. |
| Conditional items scheduled | Whether medical evidence or Cayman testing is required before travel, after arrival, or before work starts. | Appointment, form, result, and employer/WORC instructions kept as separate records. |
| Employer and insurance handoff | Arrival contact, start-date condition, health-insurance effective date, onboarding owner, and first-week appointments. | Employer and insurer confirmations; do not treat them as substitutes for border evidence. |
| Travel and carry-on file | Travel only after the status and entry checks align; tell the employer who is arriving and when. | Itinerary, local address and contacts, issued evidence, paper copies, and an offline digital backup. |
Build a claim-matched travel file
Ask the relevant official or file owner to confirm why each item is being carried. This is a planning list, not a universal CBC checklist or a guarantee that a document proves entry for a particular traveller.
| File item | What it answers | Control step |
|---|---|---|
| Issued WORC evidence | What was granted, to whom, for which sponsor or role, and subject to which conditions. | Carry the original electronic or paper record and confirm what CBC expects to see. |
| Passport or other travel document | Identity, nationality, and travel-document validity. | Match names and details to the issued status; check the current CBC entry page. |
| Visa or exemption evidence | Whether a visa is required or a stated work-permit, dependant, residence, or re-entry exemption applies. | Check each traveller separately against the current CBC list and obtain advice when unclear. |
| Dependant and relationship file | Who is named in the issued permission and which relationship evidence supports later tasks. | Do not infer one person's position from another's grant; keep each record separately. |
| Conditional medical record | Whether an official medical step remains after approval or within a stated arrival window. | Follow the exact grant and current WORC instructions; keep sensitive evidence controlled. |
| Employer and arrival contacts | Who confirms the role, start condition, airport or first-day handoff, and any unresolved item. | Keep names, phone numbers, office hours, and written instructions available offline. |
| Health-insurance evidence | Insurer, effective date, policy details, dependant treatment, and first-care route. | Verify separately from immigration and entry; insurance is not a substitute for travel permission. |
| First address and onward plan | Where the household will stay and how it reaches the address. | Keep the precise address, access instructions, and backup contact in the carry-on file. |
The 3 August form gate is an application control
WORC says that, effective 3 August 2026, only updated immigration application forms are accepted for processing. The notice addresses forms accepted for processing; it does not say that it creates a new airport document or invalidates an already issued grant. It matters again if the approval-to-arrival window triggers a new application, amendment, variation, dependant filing, or other form-based request.
- Do not add an old application form to the travel pack merely because it was used to obtain the grant.
- If a new filing is needed, reopen WORC's live immigration-forms library and use the current route-specific form and checklist.
- Keep the issued grant separate from a pending amendment, variation, dependant, or other application so their statuses are not confused.
- Ask WORC or a qualified Cayman immigration professional when a post-approval change affects the right to travel, enter, reside, or start work.
Hand luggage vs checked bags vs employer-held
Sort every document into one of three homes before packing. Anything you might need to show at the border, at a first appointment, or in the first week belongs in hand luggage. Anything irreplaceable belongs in hand luggage too — checked bags go missing at the worst possible time.
- Hand luggage: passports, approvals, employer letter, accommodation evidence, insurance certificates, medicals if required, relationship documents, prescription medication evidence.
- Checked bags: duplicate paper copies only — never the sole copy of anything.
- Employer-held: originals they explicitly said they keep; get a written list of what they hold.
- Digital: one encrypted folder with the complete set, plus a second copy with a trusted person at home.
- Photograph every page of every critical document as a last-resort fallback.
Dependants and family timing
CBC's visa-required list specifically distinguishes a person authorised by a work permit from a person named in a work permit as a dependant. Treat that as a reason to verify each traveller's issued position, not as permission to infer that the whole household is covered by the main applicant's record.
- Confirm each dependant's permission status and validity dates independently of yours.
- If dependants follow later, agree who carries which originals and when they change hands.
- Keep school-age children's records (reports, vaccination evidence, birth certificates) with the parent who travels first with the children.
- If a partner will seek work, note that their permission route is separate — collect the evidence their future application will need before leaving home.
First-week appointments the approval window should feed
The approval-to-arrival file can also support first-week banking, school, healthcare, housing, and employer tasks. Each provider's current checklist still controls, so reuse verified records without assuming the travel pack is a complete application file.
- Employer onboarding: approval evidence, passport, bank details once opened, insurance certificate.
- Bank account: passport, approval or work evidence, proof of address — see the bank-account documents checklist.
- Schools: birth certificates, immunisation records, prior school records — see the application documents checklist.
- Healthcare: insurance card, medical records, medication lists — see the first-GP-appointment checklist.
- Housing: approval or employment evidence may support lease applications — see the lease and deposit checklist.
What stays outside this page
This checklist is deliberately narrow. Use the work-permits page for application mechanics, categories, and fees. Use the arrival-day page for the first 24 hours on the ground. Use the immigration-documents checklist for the longer-term file. This page covers only the approval-to-arrival bridge.
- Use WORC and your employer's immigration provider for current requirements — rules and forms change.
- Use qualified Cayman immigration professionals for case-specific questions when the outcome matters.
- This page is a records checklist, not immigration advice.
