Moving from the UAE to Cayman

A UAE-to-Cayman move is a chain of separate handoffs: employment and final dues, work-permit and residence cancellation, dependants and Emirates ID, gratuity or pension, any continuing tax or business file, police and attested documents, banking and UAE Pass access, Cayman immigration, insurance, housing, schools, shipping, and arrival. Use this guide to control the evidence without treating a resignation, visa cancellation, or flight as permission to work in Cayman.

Key facts

  • Updated August 2026 for current Cayman relocation planning.
  • Two files — UAE departure + Cayman arrival
  • Record each traveller's nationality, emirate, employer and regulator, work and residence category, sponsor, dependants, pension or gratuity lane, business interests, planned travel, and Cayman immigration route.
  • Use licensed Cayman professionals for legal, immigration, tax, medical, insurance, and financial decisions.

Build the UAE departure and Cayman arrival files together

Your notice period, last working day, final-dues reconciliation, work-permit cancellation, residence and dependant cancellation, Emirates ID status, actual departure, Cayman work-permit milestone, insurance start, home handover, shipment, and family arrival can all happen on different dates. Put both jurisdictions into one control file before closing accounts or making non-refundable commitments.

Two files
UAE departure + Cayman arrival
  • Record each traveller's nationality, emirate, employer and regulator, work and residence category, sponsor, dependants, pension or gratuity lane, business interests, planned travel, and Cayman immigration route.
  • Keep passports, Emirates IDs, visas, work permits, contracts, payroll and leave records, bank and loan statements, tenancy and utility records, tax and entity files, civil and police documents, insurance, school records, and travel evidence together.
  • Give every employer, MOHRE or free-zone authority, ICP or GDRFA, FTA, GPSSA where relevant, bank, police, MoFA, landlord, utility, insurer, school, shipper, and Cayman handoff an owner and deadline.
  • Use written professional advice where employment rights, a dispute, immigration status, a business, tax residence, pension rights, family sponsorship, or regulated financial decisions are involved.

Identify the governing employment and residence lane

The UAE is not one universal employment-exit process. Mainland private-sector employment generally sits with MOHRE and federal private-sector law. Free-zone employees follow the rules and sponsor process of the relevant authority, with separate regimes in some financial centres. Government, domestic-worker, UAE-national, GCC-national, investor, self-sponsored, and family-sponsored files can follow other rules.

Close the contract and payroll evidence before acknowledging final dues

Start with the contract, applicable law or free-zone rule, notice, last working day, leave balance, salary, incentives, expenses, benefits, deductions, end-of-service entitlement, insurance end, and any non-compete or return-of-property obligation. The official UAE employment portal says the federal private-sector law covers termination and end-of-service matters but excludes some categories, so classify the lane before calculating anything.

  • Do not sign an acknowledgement that the dues are fully received unless the statement matches the facts and the payment evidence; seek employment advice if the reconciliation is disputed.
  • Keep the calculation separate from the cash budget until payment has actually cleared.
  • Ask for a service or experience certificate and copies of the records a future employer, bank, immigration authority, or professional body may require.

Sequence work-permit and residence cancellation correctly

MOHRE's current service is for employers cancelling covered work permits and employment contracts. It requires the relevant cancellation form and, for an electronic work permit, both parties' signatures; the establishment also confirms that rights and entitlements have been satisfied. Residence cancellation is a separate authority step. ICP's current service cancels the residence permit and linked Emirates ID, while Dubai files may use GDRFA channels.

  • Ask the employer or sponsor for the exact regulator, cancellation sequence, application owner, employee signature, evidence, status update, and written completion record.
  • Do not confuse contract termination, work-permit cancellation, residence cancellation, Emirates ID status, lawful stay, and physical departure.
  • Resolve any mismatch in name, passport, sponsor, permit, contract, or dependant record before the final travel window.
  • If the employment or dues file is disputed, use the correct regulator or legal route rather than signing an inaccurate closure statement to accelerate travel.

Calculate gratuity or savings-scheme value under the right rules

The official UAE portal says a foreign worker covered by the federal private-sector rule generally becomes eligible for end-of-service gratuity after at least one year of continuous service; it describes calculation from basic wage and says outstanding wages, other entitlements, and gratuity should be paid within 14 days after contract termination. It also describes a voluntary alternative savings scheme. These statements are not a universal calculator for every free zone, government role, domestic worker, pension member, contract, deduction, or dispute.

  • Confirm the governing regime, service dates, unpaid absence, work pattern, basic wage, eligible fractions, scheme membership, employer contributions, investment value, lawful deductions, and settlement date.
  • Reconcile the employer's calculation to the contract, payroll, authority rule, and actual bank receipt rather than estimating from total monthly compensation.
  • Do not treat gratuity or a scheme balance as available for a Cayman deposit until it is payable, reconciled, and received.
  • If the employer participates in an alternative savings arrangement or the employment is in a special jurisdiction, obtain that scheme's statement and withdrawal or transfer instructions.

Cancel dependants before the sponsor where required

ICP's residence-cancellation service says family permits under a foreign worker's sponsorship generally must be cancelled before the sponsor's residence, unless an approved hold arrangement applies. It also shows that post-cancellation grace periods vary by residence category. Get the live instruction for each person instead of relying on one household date or an old rule of thumb.

  • List every spouse, child, parent, employee, domestic worker, or other person linked to a sponsor and identify the responsible authority and order of operations.
  • Record cancellation, hold, status-change, school, insurance, custody or consent, travel, and Cayman dependant evidence for each person.
  • Do not infer a grace period from another resident's category; keep the authority's dated confirmation with the travel file.
  • Confirm how cancellation affects the linked Emirates ID and access to services that use it.

Keep the UAE tax-residence evidence file separate

The Federal Tax Authority issues Tax Residency Certificates only after reviewing the applicable UAE-law or treaty criteria and evidence. Its current service uses items such as entry-and-exit reports, passport or Emirates ID and visa, employment or business evidence, residence evidence, and financial or personal interests depending on the case. A certificate for one period does not decide future UAE residence, Cayman residence, or another country's tax result.

  • Retain entry-and-exit reports, leases, utility records, salary and employment evidence, family records, bank statements, business documents, prior certificates, and the period each item supports.
  • Ask advisers which jurisdictions and periods require a residence analysis and whether a Tax Residency Certificate or international form is actually needed.
  • Do not turn a visa cancellation, flight, day count, prior certificate, or no-personal-income-tax headline into a complete residence or treaty conclusion.
  • Update tax-residence self-certifications with banks and financial providers accurately when the facts change.

Separate salary from business, corporate-tax, VAT, and licence files

An employee departure is not an entity closure. FTA's natural-person guidance distinguishes wages, personal investment income, and real-estate investment income from a business or business activity for federal Corporate Tax purposes, while a qualifying business can create registration and filing obligations. A company, branch, free-zone entity, sole activity, VAT registration, trade licence, bank account, office, employee file, and beneficial-ownership record each need their own decision.

  • Map every entity, licence, establishment card, branch, directorship, authorised signatory, tax registration, bank account, contract, employee, office, asset, and filing deadline.
  • Decide whether each item continues, changes manager or address, becomes dormant, transfers, or closes; use the responsible licensing, free-zone, tax, immigration, and banking authority.
  • Get UAE and Cayman advice before managing a UAE business from Cayman or treating a destination move as a corporate residence, permanent-establishment, substance, or tax answer.
  • Retain accounting, tax, licence, registry, bank, contract, closure, and source-of-funds records for the applicable period.

Use the pension lane for UAE and covered GCC nationals

The expatriate private-sector gratuity summary is not the pension rule for everyone. UAE nationals and some GCC-national arrangements can sit with GPSSA or another pension authority. GPSSA publishes specific resignation and end-of-service conditions tied to insured service and other facts. Confirm registration, contribution history, last insured date, benefit or service-combination options, bank details, and employer reporting before departure.

  • Download the contribution and service record and correct gaps or mismatched salary and employer data while local evidence is available.
  • Ask the responsible pension authority how resignation, relocation outside the GCC, a future employer, nationality, age, service, and payment choice affect the exact file.
  • Do not apply an expatriate gratuity formula to an insured national or predict a pension, gratuity, refund, transfer, or service-combination outcome.
  • Keep nominations, beneficiary records, bank instructions, authority correspondence, and final employer submissions together.

Order a UAE Police Clearance Certificate for a real recipient

The UAE Government says Police Clearance Certificates are available to current and former residents through the Ministry of Interior or relevant police authority. A former resident applying from abroad may need a fingerprint card from the current country of residence attested by the UAE mission. The Cayman recipient still decides the required country, authority, issue date, language, authentication, and delivery method.

  • Do not order from the city name alone; use the authority and format accepted by the actual Cayman recipient.
  • Do not assume a police certificate is guaranteed, instantly issued, valid indefinitely, or interchangeable with a different country's record.

Attest documents only to a recipient's specification

UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs' current attestation service verifies signatures and seals on eligible documents and routes supported UAE-issued digital records through digital attestation, while other documents can use the applicable courier or mission process. Attestation does not prove the underlying fact or guarantee that a Cayman recipient will accept the document.

  • List employment, police, birth, marriage, name, divorce, custody, education, professional, medical, company, banking, and power-of-attorney documents by recipient.
  • Get written instructions for original or digital format, translation, certification, attestation, issue-date window, delivery, verification, and return of originals.
  • Complete UAE-side steps before departure where useful, but do not pay to attest every document speculatively.
  • Keep the original, certified copy, translation, attestation reference, verification result, submission date, recipient, and delivery evidence in one index.

Close or redesign banking and credit deliberately

A UAE residence cancellation can change a bank's address, identity, tax-residence, product-eligibility, credit, and customer-due-diligence file. The Central Bank's Consumer Protection Standards require written closure processes and evidence, with different timelines for ordinary deposit accounts and for credit-card or payment accounts. Outstanding balances can prevent closure, so start before travel and obtain written confirmation rather than assuming a zero balance closes the relationship.

  • Inventory current, savings, fixed-deposit, credit-card, loan, mortgage, investment, safe-deposit, salary-transfer, standing-order, direct-debit, cheque, and wallet relationships.
  • Ask each provider whether the product may remain open after relocation, which address and tax-residence evidence it needs, and what closure, no-liability, final-statement, card, cheque, or access steps apply.
  • Reconcile salary and gratuity credits, holds, pending card transactions, loans, fees, direct debits, security deposits, and refunds before moving the final balance.
  • Keep final statements, no-liability or clearance letters, closure confirmations, source-of-funds records, and transaction receipts for Cayman banking and later disputes.

Protect UAE Pass, mobile, email, and account recovery

UAE Pass is used across government and private-sector services and can hold profile and address information. Access to it, a UAE mobile number, email, banking app, password manager, cloud storage, and one-time codes may still be needed after departure. Build the recovery path before cancelling a SIM or changing the Emirates ID-linked status.

  • Inventory UAE Pass, ICP or GDRFA, MOHRE or free-zone, FTA, GPSSA, police, MoFA, bank, utility, tenancy, vehicle, insurer, employer, school, and telecom access.
  • Confirm which mobile number, email, device, biometric, Emirates ID, or in-person step each service uses and how it can be updated or recovered from Cayman.
  • Export important records and receipts, update contact details accurately, and retain a secure recovery-code and trusted-contact plan.
  • Do not keep stale residency, address, or tax information merely to avoid an access change.

Close the home, utility, vehicle, and insurance evidence file

Housing and utility processes differ by emirate. The UAE Government's utilities page routes residents to the relevant providers and shows how tenancy records and closing letters can connect to an account. Build a local checkout list for the actual emirate and contract instead of assuming a Dubai procedure applies nationwide.

Keep Cayman entry, work permission, and landing separate

A UAE passport, residence status, flight, Cayman visitor visa or exemption, Cayman work permit, permission to work, and permission to land are separate controls. Cayman Customs & Border Control publishes the current visitor-visa application and status-based exemption route; WORC owns the work-permit and residency process. Confirm the exact traveller and milestone before booking inflexible travel or starting work.

  • Obtain the Cayman employer's written application route, owner, medical and police evidence, dependant plan, fees, expected start condition, and contingency if timing changes.
  • Check the actual passport, residence history, transit countries, airline evidence, visitor-visa or exemption, permit status, and border documents for every traveller.
  • Do not treat a job offer, application, approval, visa cancellation, flight, or landing as interchangeable permission to begin work.
  • Carry approval and arrival evidence offline and keep names, passport details, job title, employer, salary, and family data consistent across the immigration, bank, school, insurance, and housing files.

Bridge health insurance and medical records

Cayman's Health Insurance Commission says health insurance is required for every person residing in the Cayman Islands, with employers responsible for employees and their unemployed spouse and children. Confirm who arranges coverage, when it starts, what happens before the first workday, and how any UAE cover or travel bridge ends.

  • Get written plan, premium-share, effective-date, dependant, waiting-period, network, referral, preauthorisation, maternity, prescription, dental, optical, and overseas-care answers.
  • Do not assume a future employer plan covers the journey, pre-start days, every dependant, or every ongoing treatment.
  • Request medical summaries, prescriptions, vaccination records, imaging and lab reports, dental and optical files, and enough lawful medication for the transition.
  • Close or continue the UAE policy only after the Cayman and travel bridge is documented.

Sequence money, housing, schools, shipping, and the first 90 days

Do not let one uncertain gratuity payment, deposit refund, bank closure, permit milestone, or shipment date control the whole move. Give each workstream a commitment gate and a fallback, then reconcile both countries after arrival.

  • Money: verify available cash, final dues, refunds, FX route, source-of-funds evidence, Cayman deposits, fees, and first payroll; keep an accessible reserve and second payment method.
  • Housing and schools: test commute, storm and flood exposure, lease evidence, deposits, school application and seat, fees, calendar, and transport; keep flexible accommodation and alternative paths.
  • Shipping: check inventory, quote scope, insurance, restricted goods, customs evidence, delivery access, and arrival timing; carry essential documents and first weeks' needs separately.
  • First 90 days: reconcile Cayman immigration, work, insurance, payroll, banking, housing, utilities, school, and transport alongside UAE dues, cancellations, bank and tax records, refunds, police or attestation delivery, and retained business obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Who cancels my UAE work permit and residence visa?

For a covered mainland private-sector employee, the employer generally submits the MOHRE work-permit and contract cancellation, then the responsible sponsor uses ICP or GDRFA for residence cancellation. Free-zone, government, domestic-worker, self-sponsored, investor, and family-sponsored lanes can differ. Ask the named authority for the exact sequence and written completion evidence.

Should I sign the UAE cancellation form before receiving my final dues?

First reconcile what the form says against the contract, payroll, gratuity or scheme statement, deductions, and actual payment evidence. MOHRE's covered cancellation process includes an establishment confirmation that rights and entitlements are satisfied and employee signatures on relevant forms. Do not acknowledge receipt inaccurately; use the proper employment or legal channel if the file is disputed.

How is UAE end-of-service gratuity calculated?

The answer depends on the governing regime, nationality or pension status, employment category, contract, service, basic wage, unpaid absence, alternative savings scheme, deductions, and special-jurisdiction rules. The federal private-sector summary is not a universal calculator. Reconcile the responsible authority's current rule and the employer's written calculation before relying on an amount.

Can I get a UAE Police Clearance Certificate after leaving?

Potentially. The UAE Government describes routes for former residents, including a fingerprint card from the current country of residence attested by the UAE mission where required. Get the Cayman recipient's written authority, country, issue-date, language, fingerprint, attestation, and delivery instructions before ordering.

Do UAE documents need MoFA attestation for Cayman?

Not automatically. The Cayman recipient decides whether it needs an original, certified copy, translation, UAE MoFA attestation, another authentication, or a digital-verification route. Get the recipient's written specification first, then use MoFA's current service for eligible documents.

Can I start working in Cayman after my UAE visa is cancelled?

No conclusion follows from UAE cancellation alone. A Cayman visitor visa or exemption, work-permit application, approval, permission to work, and permission to land are separate controls. Confirm the exact traveller, permit, employer, start condition, and border evidence with CBC, WORC, and qualified advice where needed.
