Cayman Dependant Child Turning 18 & Student Visa Checklist

• Copy the exact name, category, holder or sponsor, issue date, expiry date, conditions, and reference number from the current immigration document.
• Ask whether the young adult remains named on a work permit, RERC, independent-means certificate, permanent-residence letter, or another permission after the relevant birthday, renewal, course, or travel event.
• If full-time study is the intended route, confirm whether the institution and course meet CBC's current student-visa requirements.
• Keep study, residence, travel, insurance, and permission to work as separate questions until each responsible organisation answers in writing.

Map the actual starting position

The right planning path depends on the document already held, not the family's shorthand description of the child as a dependant. Use this table to frame questions for CBC, WORC, the institution, and qualified Cayman counsel; it does not determine eligibility.

Build one birthday, course, permission, and travel calendar

Do not let the eighteenth birthday, a school graduation, an institution start date, an immigration expiry, and a family trip sit in separate calendars. Put the decision points in one file early enough for the responsible authority to confirm the route and document timing.

• Record the eighteenth birthday, current permission expiry, sponsor renewal, last school day, exam or results dates, course acceptance deadline, enrolment date, orientation, first class, tuition dates, and planned travel.
• Add passport expiry, police-certificate issue date, medical declaration date, insurance renewal, accommodation dates, and any institution document deadlines.
• Name the owner for each CBC, WORC, institution, insurer, employer, and adviser question, with the date asked and the written answer received.
• Keep deposits, flights, housing changes, vehicle commitments, and overseas-school withdrawal reversible while the post-18 route is unresolved.

Verify the institution and course before building the visa file

CBC's student-visa page refers to full-time study at a recognised educational institution and asks for written confirmation of acceptance, the proposed course, its duration, weekly attendance hours, and annual tuition fees. The Ministry of Education states that Cayman educational institutions must hold current Education Council registration. Ask both the institution and CBC how the current course is treated.

Prepare the CBC student-visa evidence pack

CBC says its published document list is not exhaustive. The current page asks student-visa applicants for a passport-style photograph, financial-resource evidence, written institution confirmation, sponsor income evidence where an individual sponsors the student, a police clearance, and a medical declaration. Use the live application and instructions at filing time.

• Keep passport identity pages, current Cayman permission, travel history, contact details, and application reference records together.
• Request the institution letter in the exact form needed for the course, including duration, attendance hours, and tuition information.
• Prepare bank or other financial-resource evidence and, where relevant, the individual sponsor's employment or income evidence without mixing unsupported future income into the file.
• Follow the current instructions for the police clearance and medical declaration; do not order time-sensitive documents from an old checklist.
• Save the submitted application, upload list, payment receipt, requests for further information, decision, and issued document in a version-controlled folder.

Keep identity, relationship, and sponsor records consistent

Age-18 transitions often expose small differences across passports, birth certificates, school records, dependant files, bank evidence, insurance, and parent names. Resolve discrepancies before the same mismatch reaches several organisations.

• Compare full legal name, former names, date and place of birth, nationality, passport number, parent or sponsor names, home address, phone, and email across every file.
• Confirm whether a birth certificate, certified copy, translation, apostille, custody record, consent, or name-change evidence is required for the exact application or recipient.
• Use the same course title, institution name, start date, sponsor, address, and financial explanation in the CBC, institution, insurance, and family budget records.
• Do not submit an altered scan, partial record, guessed date, or inconsistent sponsor story; ask the receiving organisation how to correct the file.

Recheck health insurance at the same time

The Health Insurance Commission says every Cayman resident must have at least the Standard Health Insurance Contract and describes employer responsibility for resident dependent children. A young adult's birthday, study pattern, immigration document, employment status, or time overseas can change what HR or the insurer needs to assess. Ask for the actual coverage position and effective dates in writing.

Budget the adult-student route without invented costs

Use current quotes and official instructions rather than a copied total. The cash need can include tuition, deposits, immigration application charges, police and medical records, certified documents, health insurance, housing, transport, devices, books, travel, and an emergency or course-change reserve.

• Separate refundable, non-refundable, recurring, one-off, foreign-currency, and date-sensitive amounts.
• Record who pays each item, which account or card will work, what evidence the payment creates, and what happens if the route is delayed or declined.
• Do not count hoped-for part-time work, a future scholarship, or an unconfirmed employer benefit as available cash.
• Keep a fallback for delayed enrolment, a different institution, overseas study, later travel, insurance changes, or an independent work route.

Treat study, entry, and work as separate gates

CBC's entry guidance says a person may be refused entry if they intend to study without the required student visa or unlawfully engage in gainful occupation. An institution acceptance, student application, dependant record, visitor entry, job offer, or interview is not a substitute for the permission required for the intended activity.

• Before travel, carry the current passport, issued immigration or student document, institution evidence, accommodation and sponsor details, return or onward plan where relevant, and insurance records.
• Before study begins, confirm that the issued permission and institution record cover the actual course, campus, attendance pattern, and dates.
• Before any paid work, internship, freelance service, or business activity, ask WORC and the relevant employer or adviser which permission and conditions apply.
• If the young adult leaves, changes course, stops attending, defers, graduates, gains employment, or changes sponsor, ask which authority must be notified and by when.

Use a written post-18 readiness gate

A family should be able to answer the route, course, funding, insurance, travel, and contingency questions from current records before treating continued Cayman study or residence as settled.

• CBC or WORC has confirmed which current or new permission applies to the actual facts, and the family has the issued document or a clearly understood lawful interim position.
• The institution has confirmed recognition, acceptance, course dates, attendance pattern, tuition terms, and the records it will provide.
• The insurer or HR team has confirmed coverage, effective dates, premiums, study or travel implications, and the fallback route.
• The budget works without assumed employment, and the family has a plan for delay, refusal, deferral, overseas study, a course change, or a later work-permit application.
• A local route-and-evidence review has resolved any contradiction before non-refundable commitments are made.
