Employer-sponsored work permits
The most common path. Your employer applies to WORC (Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman) on your behalf. Permits are tied to a specific employer and role — you cannot switch employers without a new permit application.
- Employer handles the application and pays the permit fee (typically $1,000–$3,000/year depending on category).
- You cannot freelance or self-employ on a standard work permit.
- Spousal dependant permits (Right to Work) allow partners to seek employment.
- Key Employee status can be granted for senior roles, offering more flexibility and longer permit terms.
- Rollover policy was repealed in 2022 — long-term employment is now more straightforward.
Global Citizen Concierge (remote workers)
Launched in 2020, this program allows remote workers earning income from outside the Cayman Islands to live and work from Grand Cayman for up to 2 years.
- Individual: $1,469/year. Couple: $2,398/year. Family: additional fees per dependant.
- Must earn income from a company or business outside the Cayman Islands.
- Must have annual income of at least $100,000 (individual) or $150,000 (couple).
- Must have health insurance valid in Cayman.
- Application processed online through the Cayman Islands government portal.
- Does not lead to permanent residency — it is a temporary certificate.
Residency by investment
For high-net-worth individuals, Cayman offers residency tied to property investment or direct investment in the local economy.
- Investment-based residency allows you to live in Cayman without employer sponsorship.
- Does not grant the right to work for a Cayman employer — separate work permit needed for that.
- Applications processed through WORC. Legal counsel strongly recommended.
| Category | Minimum investment | Residency term |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of Direct Investment | $1,000,000+ in Cayman business | 25 years |
| Residency by property (Substantial Business Presence) | $2,400,000+ property | 25 years |
| Residency by property (no business) | $2,400,000+ property | 25 years |
| Person of Independent Means | $160,000/year income + $1M investment | 25 years |
Permanent residency
After 8 years of continuous legal residence, you may apply for Permanent Residency (PR). This is a points-based system considering factors like length of residence, employment, community involvement, and financial standing.
- 8 years of legal, continuous residence required before application.
- Points-based assessment: employment, community involvement, property ownership, family ties.
- PR grants the right to live and work in Cayman indefinitely.
- Annual fee applies to maintain permanent residency status.
- Legal counsel strongly recommended for the PR application process.
Caymanian status
Caymanian status is the highest level of belonging and grants full rights including the right to vote. It can be obtained through birth, descent, marriage (after a qualifying period), or by grant from the government.
- Born in Cayman to Caymanian parents: automatic status.
- Marriage to a Caymanian: may apply after a qualifying period.
- By grant: discretionary, typically after many years of permanent residency.
- Caymanian status holders have unrestricted right to work and own property.
Next steps
Understanding which permit or residency category fits your situation is the first step. A consultation can help match your employment, investment, or lifestyle situation to the right immigration pathway.
- Determine whether employer-sponsored, investment, or remote work pathway fits.
- Start the process 3-6 months before your intended move date.
- Consult with a Cayman immigration lawyer for complex situations.
