Build the Swiss departure and Cayman arrival files together
Your final working day, commune deregistration, Swiss-abroad registration, tax evidence, OASI statement, pension-fund decision, criminal-record extract, authentication, Cayman work-permit milestone, insurance start, shipment, and family arrival can all fall on different dates. Put both jurisdictions into one control file before cancelling access or making non-refundable commitments.
- Record each traveller's citizenship, commune and canton, Swiss residence or permit status, employment, OASI number, pension arrangements, passport, health position, bank access, dependants, route, and Cayman immigration lane.
- Keep contracts, payroll, tax and registration evidence, OASI and pension statements, criminal and civil records, apostilles and translations, banking, housing, school, medical, shipping, and travel evidence together.
- Assign an owner and deadline to every employer, adviser, commune, canton, compensation office, pension fund, registry, Federal Chancellery, translator, bank, Swiss representation, landlord, school, shipper, CBC, WORC, and insurer handoff.
- Use written professional advice where tax residence, retained Swiss income or entities, pension withdrawals, custody, immigration, or regulated financial decisions are involved.
Classify the Swiss file before using a checklist
A Swiss citizen, foreign national resident in Switzerland, employee, self-employed person, company director, landlord, pensioner, student, posted worker, and dependant can have different departure controls. Citizenship, communal registration, cantonal tax position, Swiss-abroad registration, social-insurance coverage, pension rights, bank eligibility, and Cayman immigration are separate questions.
| Lane | Primary controls | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | Employment close, final payroll and salary certificate, tax and commune file, OASI history, pension fund, criminal and civil documents, banking, and Cayman permission. | A resignation, salary certificate, or Cayman offer closes every Swiss or Cayman issue. |
| Self-employed, founder, director, shareholder, or landlord | Personal move plus each registration, entity, property, filing, tax, account, authority, management, pension, and beneficial-owner file. | Communal deregistration automatically closes an activity or company or ends Swiss economic affiliation. |
| Pensioner or benefit recipient | Residence and bank updates, payment and tax position, life-certificate control, health transition, and Cayman status. | Every Swiss payment and health arrangement continues abroad on the same terms. |
| Foreign national or posted worker | Swiss permit and departure position, employer and social-security instructions, passport-country records, pension and insurance, and separate Cayman evidence for each traveller. | A Swiss permit, UK rule, posting letter, or principal worker's application automatically covers Cayman or the family. |
Use Switzerland's visa-free visitor status as one gate only
Cayman Customs & Border Control currently places Switzerland in the visa-not-required column for visitors. That removes the ordinary Cayman visitor-visa application for a Swiss passport holder under the live list; it does not guarantee airline boarding or landing, authorise work, settle transit rules, or replace a work permit or dependant approval.
- Recheck CBC and the airline close to travel because nationality, residence, route, transit point, document validity, and purpose can change the evidence required.
- Do not buy an inflexible ticket until the transit, work-permit or dependant milestone, landing plan, insurance, and family sequence have been checked for the actual travellers.
| Gate | Evidence to obtain | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Passport and route | CBC's live country list, passport validity, transit-country requirements, ticket, accommodation, funds, and purpose evidence. | Guaranteed boarding, landing, length of stay, or permission to work. |
| Work-permit or dependant route | Employer, application type, current forms, evidence, fees, medical and police requirements, and written status for each traveller. | That a submitted, acknowledged, or paid application has been approved. |
| Airline and landing | Passport, ticket, onward or return evidence where applicable, funds, accommodation, and evidence matching the real purpose of travel. | That CBC must admit the traveller or remove every landing condition. |
Separate visitor landing from permission to work
Visa-free visitor status and permission to land do not authorise ordinary employment. Cayman immigration legislation and forms have changed, including amendments that commenced in 2026. Plan the employer, application, medical, police, travel, and start-date sequence from the current WORC route rather than an old checklist.
- Ask the employer which WORC route applies, who owns the application, which evidence is outstanding, and what written milestone permits the specific person to perform the specific work.
- Keep the offer, application reference, receipts, correspondence, medical and police evidence, decision, passport endorsement or digital status, and employer start-date confirmation.
- Do not start orientation, remote work from Cayman, client delivery, or another activity that may count as work until the employer and relevant authority have confirmed the position.
- Treat each dependant's landing, permission, insurance, school, and later employment position as a separate file.
Close Swiss employment as a reconciliation
Before departure, reconcile the written end date, contract and amendments, final payroll, unused leave, bonus or commission, expenses, benefits, company property, OASI and pension records, tax information, references, and contacts needed for later corrections. The exact termination documents, amounts, deadlines, and rights depend on the facts and applicable agreement, so use the employer's written calculation and employment advice rather than a generic checklist as the legal answer.
- Resolve mismatched names, dates, OASI number, salary, contributions, pension fund, insurer, or bank details while the employer and Swiss phone number remain accessible.
- Do not sign an inaccurate or misunderstood settlement; obtain employment advice if the termination, calculation, or record is disputed.
- Budget from money actually received, not an estimated settlement, refund, benefit, pension payout, or exchange rate.
| Control | Ask the employer for | Keep yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Employment end | Written last day, termination basis, notice, handover, leave, property return, benefit end dates, and records applicable to the actual exit. | Contract, amendments, notices, attendance and leave records, role evidence, handover, and correspondence. |
| Money and tax record | Final payslip, salary, bonus or commission, leave, expenses, deductions, pension transfer details, payment date, and salary certificate timing. | Payslips, calculations, receipts, bank credits, annual salary certificates, contribution evidence, and disputed-item correspondence. |
| Future corrections | Payroll, tax, HR, benefits, accident-insurance, OASI, and pension contacts that remain available after departure. | Qualifications, references, annual records, protocol numbers, and secure contacts. |
Sequence commune departure and Swiss-abroad registration
FDFA says cantonal and communal reporting requirements can differ. Its current emigration guidance describes a general departure pattern based on duration, giving up accommodation, and intention to return, while the responsible residents' office controls the actual procedure. A Swiss citizen who is no longer registered with a Swiss commune and takes residence abroad must register with the competent Swiss representation, generally within 90 days of announcing departure, using the departure certificate and requested identity or civil-status evidence.
- Swiss-abroad registration supports consular administration; it does not grant Cayman status or settle Swiss tax, social-security, health-insurance, pension, bank, or civil-law questions.
- Foreign nationals should separately confirm how departure affects the Swiss residence permit, re-entry, unemployment, benefits, and family records.
| Control | Confirm | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Commune and canton | Notice date, departure date, accommodation, permit, family, vehicle, tax, voting, utility, school, and certificate requirements. | Filed notice, certificate of departure, certificate of origin where issued, receipts, and named contacts. |
| Swiss Abroad Register | Citizenship, new domicile, responsible representation, 90-day control, Online Desk, address proof, identity, and family records. | Application, attachments, acknowledgement, requests, completion evidence, and account recovery details. |
| Continuing updates | Address, telephone, email, civil status, citizenship, voting, passport, and movement to a new consular district. | Submitted updates, receipts, decisions, and tested Online Desk access. |
Determine Swiss tax residence from the full cantonal file
Swiss tax is administered across federal, cantonal, and communal levels. The Federal Tax Administration's current system materials distinguish unlimited liability based on personal affiliation from limited liability based on economic affiliation such as business operations, a permanent establishment, or Swiss real estate. The same materials identify stay-based thresholds, but a commune certificate, one day count, or Cayman lease is not the complete answer for every fact pattern.
- Confirm the actual position with the last commune and cantonal tax authority; do not copy another canton's form, deadline, or filing treatment.
- If the home, family, work, business management, property, assets, prior filings, or timing is mixed, obtain Swiss cross-border tax advice before taking or filing a residence position.
| Evidence lane | Control question | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Domicile, residence, and days | Where was the person's centre of life, what homes remained available, and what Swiss stays or work continued? | Passports, tickets, travel calendar, leases or ownership, household evidence, registrations, and advice. |
| Departure-year filing | Which commune and canton control, what period closes, which return, assessment, prepayment, refund, representative, and address applies? | Departure filing, salary certificate, assessments, payments, refunds, powers, and correspondence. |
| Continuing economic affiliation | Does Swiss property, business, permanent establishment, board or management activity, pension, compensation, investment, or another item remain? | Contracts, payors, entities, property, accounts, management records, valuations, withholding, and tax workpapers. |
Map retained Swiss income, property, accounts, and entities
A move can leave Swiss rent, a home, salary or deferred pay, a pension, vested benefits, pillar 3 assets, shares, a sole proprietorship, company, board role, professional fees, investments, loans, an estate, a refund, or another filing behind. Residence status is only one part of the file; retained Swiss items, registrations, payors, and assets may continue to create tax, withholding, management, reporting, banking, or payment obligations.
- Inventory each property, entity, directorship, shareholding, investment, pension, vested-benefits account, pillar 3 arrangement, loan, bank account, contract, tenant, payor, administrator, registration, and expected transaction.
- Assign the return, withholding, company filing, property management, bank, representative, power-of-attorney, and evidence owner for every retained item.
- Test cantonal or communal digital access and preserve assessments, returns, salary certificates, notices, balances, direct-debit details, and adviser workpapers before changing devices or numbers.
- Do not sell, gift, dissolve, transfer, withdraw, pledge, surrender, or appoint a representative merely to simplify the move; record the commercial, legal, pension, tax, and control decision first.
Reconcile OASI history and the country-coordination perimeter
The OASI individual account records income, contribution periods, and care credits used in pension calculations; missing years can reduce future benefits. Before relying on a UK, EU/EFTA, posting, or bilateral rule, use the Federal Social Insurance Office's current country list and the actual nationality, residence, employer, work location, and benefit. A British Overseas Territory is not automatically covered merely because a UK agreement exists.
- Resolve missing or mismatched periods while the employer, compensation office, records, and authentication channels remain accessible.
- Keep Swiss and Cayman contribution histories as separate evidence unless a competent authority confirms a coordination route for the actual person and work.
| Control | Reconcile | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Individual account | Identity, OASI number, employers, self-employment, income, contribution periods, care credits, and gaps. | Downloaded statement, salary certificates, payslips, employer records, correction request, and response. |
| Applicable system | Nationality, destination, residence, employer, posting, work in multiple countries, treaty list, and start and end dates. | Authority or adviser analysis, employer instruction, certificate, application, decision, and contribution records. |
| Access and representation | Compensation office, Swiss Compensation Office, login, phone dependence, address, email, authorised representative, and recovery route. | Access test, recovery details, authority, protocol numbers, and secure contacts. |
Make the voluntary OASI/DI decision before its deadline
The Swiss Compensation Office says Swiss, EU, and EFTA nationals who transfer domicile outside the EU or EFTA may join voluntary OASI/DI only if the stated conditions are met: the required nationality, residence outside the EU/EFTA, at least five consecutive years of prior insurance, and an application no later than 12 months after leaving compulsory coverage. Membership is individual, not automatic for a household.
- Confirm nationality, exact end of compulsory coverage, five-year record, Cayman domicile, application deadline, family members, income and assets, contribution calculation, payment method, and ongoing declarations.
- Compare the cost, contribution-gap effect, DI and survivor protection, expected duration abroad, alternative protection, and future return or retirement plan with qualified advice.
- Keep the departure certificate, consular registration, membership form, supporting evidence, decision, contribution assessments, payments, annual declarations, and correspondence.
- Do not let a missed 12-month application deadline occur because the pension, tax, employer, and commune files were handled by different people.
Treat occupational-pension cash payout as a decision, not a default
Federal guidance says vested benefits can be paid out on request when a person leaves Switzerland permanently and provides proof. It separately limits withdrawal of the statutory minimum for people emigrating to an EU or EFTA state and covered there. Cayman is outside the EU/EFTA, but that does not make a payout automatic, tax-free, suitable, or free of fund, pledge, consent, identity, or recipient-bank requirements.
- Model pension, lump-sum, tax, currency, investment, creditor, estate, disability, and survivor consequences before signing a payout instruction.
- Do not use a cash payout as the default source for Cayman deposits or relocation costs merely because the route may be available.
| Lane | Confirm before acting | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Leave invested | Pension fund or vested-benefits institution, fees, investment, risk and survivor cover, address eligibility, beneficiary records, and access from Cayman. | Exit statement, transfer instruction, receipt, policy or account terms, annual statements, and beneficiary confirmation. |
| Cash payout | Permanent-departure proof, destination, fund rules, spouse or partner consent, tax, banking, FX, timing, and loss of future benefits. | Advice, application, certified evidence, consent, decision, withholding, payment, and complete transfer trail. |
| Missing assets | Former employers, pension funds, vested-benefits accounts, central search route, names, OASI number, and service periods. | Search request, employer records, responses, transfer evidence, and reconciled inventory. |
Put pension payment and life-certificate controls on a calendar
The Swiss Compensation Office handles many OASI and DI files for people abroad. It says annual existence checks can involve a certificate of life and marital status that must be returned within 90 days when sent; if no form is received, no action is required on that control. Payment, eligibility, proof, reporting, and tax still depend on the actual benefit and file.
- Confirm the responsible office, recorded address and civil status, bank and currency, transfer fields and fees, tax position, portal access, and reporting duties.
- Calendar incoming life-certificate correspondence and keep the form, competent-authority certification, identity copy, submission, tracking, status, payment statements, and follow-up.
- Report changes in address, bank, civil status, work, representation, or other benefit facts when the responsible office requires them; do not rely on a consular or bank update alone.
- Keep OASI, DI, occupational pension, private pension, accident, unemployment, and supplementary-benefit questions in separate lanes until the responsible institution confirms treatment.
Replace Swiss health-insurance assumptions with written cover
The Federal Office of Public Health says people who take up residence abroad generally leave Swiss compulsory health insurance at departure, subject to exceptions such as certain pensioners, cross-border workers, posted workers, public servants, and treaty cases. Insurers may offer contractual continuation outside the EU/EFTA/UK. A commune notice, Swiss health card, employer promise, travel policy, or pending Cayman permit is not proof of the exact end date or active Cayman cover.
- Sequence written Swiss end or continuation evidence, explicit gap cover, and written Cayman activation so no family member falls between systems.
- Move records, prescriptions, treatment plans, imaging, vaccination evidence, devices, and enough legally transportable medication through the actual import and refill route.
| Stage | Evidence to obtain | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Swiss position | Legal domicile, exception or posting status, insurer and canton decision, dependant treatment, accident cover, end date, claims, and treatment in progress. | Deregistration alone settles coverage or permits cancellation on any chosen date. |
| Travel or contractual gap | Named insureds, territories, dates, exclusions, pre-existing conditions, evacuation, work and residence use, and written confirmation. | A European card, supplementary policy, or ordinary travel cover protects a Cayman relocation and every dependant. |
| Cayman policy | Insurer, employer contribution, start date, waiting periods, network, deductible, coinsurance, prescriptions, maternity, dependants, and proof of activation. | An offer letter, application, or payroll deduction proves the policy is active. |
Order the correct Swiss criminal-record extract
The Federal Office of Justice warns that official extracts should be ordered through its official online service or a Swiss post office, not misleading third-party sites. The recipient controls whether it needs an ordinary or special extract, issue age, language, paper or electronic format, signature, authentication, translation, and delivery route. An extract is not a universal certificate of a clean record or recipient acceptance.
- Order only after the Cayman recipient confirms the exact record and timing, so a short acceptance window is not wasted before the permit file is ready.
- If another country or prior residence record is required, keep it separate; a Swiss extract does not search every jurisdiction where the person has lived.
| Control | Confirm | Keep |
|---|---|---|
| Record and purpose | Applicant, recipient, statutory purpose, ordinary or special extract, identity, jurisdictions, issue age, and language. | Recipient instruction, official order, identity evidence, receipt, and issued extract. |
| Format and timing | Paper or electronic version, original signature, delivery address, permit sequence, validity window, and replacement plan. | Original and scan, envelope or validation evidence, tracking, submission, and recipient response. |
| Authentication | Whether the recipient requires Federal Chancellery authentication or apostille, destination country, translation, and return logistics. | Instruction, authenticated extract, payment, return receipt, translation, and acceptance evidence. |
Sequence civil records, apostilles, and translations
Swiss official guidance explains that an apostille or legalisation authenticates the origin, signature, seal, or official capacity of a public document. It does not certify the truth of the content or guarantee acceptance. Swiss apostilles are issued by the competent cantonal authority or Federal Chancellery depending on the document; Swiss representations abroad are not authorised to issue apostilles.
- Ask the recipient for the exact birth, marriage, divorce, adoption, custody, consent, qualification, medical, company, or other document; issuing authority; form; issue age; translation; authentication; and delivery format.
- Confirm whether the Hague Convention applies to the document and destination and whether the cantonal legalisation authority or Federal Chancellery is competent; do not assume every Swiss record follows one route.
- Keep scans before submission, but retain the original, certified copy, apostille or legalisation, translator statement, receipt, tracking, and acceptance evidence as separate records.
- Report civil-status changes through the responsible Swiss representation when required to keep the Swiss Abroad Register and civil-status records current.
Preserve passport, consular, and digital continuity
The current official listing places the Cayman Islands in the consular district of the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta and also lists a Swiss honorary consulate in West Bay. An honorary office does not replace Atlanta or guarantee that passport, civil-status, social, visa, or emergency services can be completed locally, remotely, without appointment, or without travel.
- Map passport and identity-card expiry, blank pages, citizenship and civil-status records, Swiss Abroad registration, dependant documents, emergency-document risk, appointment lead time, biometrics, and safe return of originals.
- Confirm directly whether a service is handled by Atlanta, the Cayman honorary consulate, another processing centre, the Online Desk, mail, or travel before booking around it.
- Test Online Desk, AGOV or cantonal access, OASI and pension portals, email, e-banking, mobile authentication, password manager, and recovery paths from a clean device before cancelling a Swiss number.
- Store recovery codes and trusted contacts securely; do not keep the only copy in the phone, email account, or password manager that may itself require that number.
Re-paper banking and source-of-funds evidence
A move can change a bank's recorded residence, tax self-certification, contact details, product eligibility, investment access, mortgage terms, transfer controls, or proof requirements. The bank's written rules and regulated decision control. A commune departure certificate, Swiss Abroad registration, Cayman permit, foreign address, or tax opinion does not force every Swiss institution to retain every account or product.
- Keep enough accessible liquidity for deposits, insurance, temporary housing, transport, school costs, shipment delay, and onboarding friction without assuming a pension payout or transfer clears instantly.
- Compare the full delivered amount, fee, spread, limits, timing, traceability, support, and recipient requirements rather than an advertised exchange rate alone.
| Control | Ask in writing | Evidence pack |
|---|---|---|
| Residence and eligibility | When and how to update address and tax residence, which accounts, cards, custody, investments, pension, or mortgage products remain available, and what restrictions or migration apply. | Institution response, submitted forms, tax self-certification, Cayman address and status evidence, and account confirmation. |
| Access and transfers | Swiss mobile dependence, strong authentication, card delivery, transfer limits, fees, FX spread, beneficiary cooling-off, and support from Cayman. | Access test, device and recovery record, fee schedule, transfer receipts, and beneficiary confirmations. |
| Source of funds | Documents for salary, savings, property sale, investments, pension payout, gifts, loans, inheritance, business proceeds, or pension income. | Contracts, salary certificates, tax returns, bank statements, sale or estate records, advice, transfer chain, and certified copies where requested. |
Sequence family, housing, and school commitments
A family move can require separate passport, immigration, relationship, custody, consent, school, medical, insurance, and travel evidence for each person. A Swiss household registration, civil record, principal worker's permit, Cayman lease, or school deposit does not automatically establish every dependant, custody, cover, or admission outcome.
- Build a person-by-person matrix for identity, relationship, residence history, police records where required, medical, landing, dependant permission, insurance, school, and later work rights.
- Where a child travels with one parent or guardian, have the airline, transit authority, CBC, school, and counsel confirm the current consent, custody, authentication, and translation evidence.
- Shortlist neighborhoods from the actual work location, school route, peak-hour commute, budget, flood and storm questions, transport, household needs, and likely start date.
- Ask landlords and schools for all deposit, fee, refund, inventory, insurance, pet, support, space, assessment, record, immunisation, transport, break, renewal, and notice terms in writing before paying.
Control shipping and run the first 90 days as a reconciliation
Cayman Customs & Border Control publishes the official imports route. A shipper's quote does not prove duty treatment, eligibility, valuation, prohibited or restricted status, inspection, clearance, storage, or delivery timing. Arrival also does not close the Swiss file: reconcile Cayman permission, insurance and setup against every open commune, canton, OASI, pension, bank, consular, tax, and family control.
- Create a photographed inventory with ownership date, value basis, serial numbers, receipts where available, and a carry, ship, store, sell, donate, or exclude decision; confirm the actual import route with CBC or a licensed broker.
- Keep passports, permits, civil and criminal documents, Swiss tax and bank access, medication, school records, valuables, and first-month essentials out of checked or shipped household goods.
- Days 1–30: confirm landing conditions, written work-authorisation milestone, insurance, first payroll, bank, housing, school, shipment, communications, and Swiss account access.
- Days 31–90: reconcile tax and retained-item calendars, OASI and pension decisions, insurance close, bank classification, Swiss Abroad and civil-status updates, representatives, beneficiaries, evidence archives, and every remaining deadline.
Know where professional advice is essential
This page is a planning guide, not a Swiss tax-residence conclusion, commune or cantonal instruction, employment calculation, social-security coordination decision, OASI or pension recommendation, bank eligibility decision, apostille instruction for a specific document, Cayman work-permit or landing outcome, financial recommendation, or legal opinion. Use the official sources below to frame the file, then have the relevant authority or qualified professional confirm material decisions in writing.
- Swiss cross-border tax and business: residence, departure-year return, retained income and property, entities, management, investments, pensions, withholding, representatives, and continuing filings.
- Swiss employment, insurance, and pensions: contract close, final money and records, OASI coverage and gaps, voluntary OASI/DI, occupational and vested benefits, payout, survivor and disability cover, benefits, and representation.
- Cayman immigration and employment: visitor entry, transit, landing, work-permit route, permission to work, dependants, medical and police evidence, start date, job changes, and renewals.
- Banking, insurance, property, school, custody, consent, powers of attorney, translations, apostille, pension transfers, and regulated payments where the receiving institution's exact requirements control.
