Build the Nigerian departure and Cayman arrival files together
Your last working day, final pay, tax reporting, pension record, police certificate, document authentication, bank changes, shipment, Cayman visa or exemption, work-permit milestone, insurance start, and family arrival can all fall on different dates. Put both jurisdictions into one control file before cancelling access or making non-refundable commitments.
- Record each traveller's nationality, Nigerian residence and employment status, tax authority, pension history, bank access, dependants, planned travel, and Cayman immigration route.
- Keep passports, NIN and Tax ID references, contracts, payroll and tax records, pension evidence, bank statements, civil and police records, housing, school, medical, shipping, and travel evidence together.
- Give every employer, tax authority or adviser, pension administrator, police or document service, bank, landlord, school, shipper, and Cayman handoff an owner and deadline.
- Use written professional advice where tax residence, a company or property, pension rights, immigration status, family status, or regulated financial decisions are involved.
Classify the Nigerian file before using a checklist
A Nigerian citizen, foreign national working in Nigeria, employee, contractor, founder, director, landlord, pension contributor, student, and dependant can have different departure controls. Citizenship, tax residence, a Nigerian employer record, bank eligibility, and Cayman immigration are separate questions.
| Lane | Primary controls | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Nigerian employee | Contract close, final payroll, PAYE and annual records, pension account, police and civil documents, banking, and Cayman permission. | The last payslip closes every tax or pension issue. |
| Founder, director, shareholder, trader, or landlord | Personal move plus each entity, property, filing, tax, account, authority, management, and beneficial-ownership file. | A personal flight closes a Nigerian business or ends Nigerian-source obligations. |
| Foreign national leaving Nigeria | Nigerian employment, residence and tax close plus passport-country records and Cayman immigration. | A Nigerian police or tax record replaces the passport-country file. |
| Family or dependant | Each traveller's passport, visa or exemption, permit or dependant route, police and civil records, insurance, school, custody, consent, and arrival date. | The principal worker's approval automatically covers every family member. |
Separate Cayman visa, landing, and work-permit gates
Cayman Customs & Border Control currently lists Nigeria as a visa-required nationality unless a stated exemption applies. The same official page includes exemptions for a person authorised by a Cayman work permit and a named dependant, among other fact-specific categories. A visa, a visa exemption, permission to land, and permission to work are different controls.
- Do not buy an inflexible ticket until the visa or exemption, transit route, permit milestone, passport validity, and family sequence have been checked for the actual travellers.
- CBC's visitor-visa page currently asks applicants to prepare employment or study evidence, bank statements, passport material, and a recent police certificate, but the exact route can differ for a permit holder or exempt traveller.
| Gate | Evidence to obtain | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor visa or exemption | CBC's written rule for the traveller's nationality, residence, route, permit or dependant status, and travel dates. | Permission to start a Cayman job. |
| Work-permit route | Employer, role, application type, required documents, fees, medical and police-file requirements, and written status. | That a submitted or paid application has been approved. |
| Airline and transit | Passport validity, transit permissions, itinerary, onward evidence, and carrier document checks. | That CBC must admit the traveller on arrival. |
| Landing and start date | Written confirmation of the immigration milestone that permits the specific traveller to enter and, where relevant, work. | That every dependant, renewal, or later job change is covered. |
Close employment and payroll with reusable evidence
Reconcile the contract, notice, last working day, salary, bonus or commission, leave, expenses, benefits, deductions, pension contributions, company property, tax records, and final payment. Use the contract, employer policy, pension administrator, and relevant tax authority rather than a generic entitlement estimate.
- Resolve mismatched names, dates, pay, deductions, Tax ID, NIN, pension account, and employer records while the people and systems are accessible.
- Budget from money actually received, not an estimated final pay, bonus, refund, pension access, or foreign-exchange rate.
| Control | Ask the employer for | Keep yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Employment end | Accepted notice or termination, last day, handover, leave, property return, and service or reference records. | Contract, notices, role and handover evidence, leave balance, and lawful work records. |
| Money | Final payroll, salary, variable pay, expenses, deductions, benefit end dates, pension remittance, and payment date. | Payslips, calculations, receipts, bank credits, pension statements, and disputed-item correspondence. |
| Tax and continuity | PAYE records, year-to-date income and deductions, employer contacts, and the route for later corrections. | Tax ID, annual returns or assessments, pension identifier, references, qualifications, and secure contact details. |
Build a 2026 Nigerian tax evidence file
Nigeria's 2026 Personal Income Tax Guidelines cover employment income, annual returns, Tax IDs, tax-clearance certificates, and the split between State or FCT administration for resident individuals and Nigeria Revenue Service administration for listed non-residents. Those rules make the facts, address, income sources, employer reporting, and responsible authority important; a departure date alone is not a tax conclusion.
- Keep travel and residence dates, homes retained or surrendered, employment and business income, property, investments, bank records, Tax ID, NIN, PAYE evidence, returns, assessments, tax-clearance records, and correspondence.
- Ask which Nigerian authority owns the final and continuing filings, how a foreign address and tax residence should be recorded, and how Nigerian-source income will be handled after the move.
- Use the NRS self-service portal to review the available profile, filing, payment, assessment, refund, and tax-clearance functions, but do not change a legal position without confirming the facts.
- Do not assume Cayman residence, no Nigerian salary, a foreign bank account, or a one-way flight automatically ends Nigerian tax obligations.
Treat business cessation and a personal move as different events
The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 includes notification rules when a taxable person temporarily or permanently ceases a trade or business and separately covers changes to business and contact details. Those provisions are not a blanket instruction for every departing employee. A founder, contractor, landlord, or director should map the specific Nigerian activity before filing, suspending, or deregistering anything.
- Inventory every company, business name, partnership, directorship, shareholding, property, employee, contract, licence, Tax ID, bank account, registered address, annual return, and beneficial-owner record.
- Ask Nigerian and Cayman advisers about residence, management and control, permanent establishment, payroll, withholding, property income, VAT, source rules, succession, and reporting before operating a Nigerian business from Cayman.
- Use CAC's current post-registration services for actual record changes and annual returns; do not file a director, address, ownership, or cessation change merely because the owner travels.
- Keep entity documents, historic returns, acquisition and sale evidence, contracts, valuations, statements, and source-of-funds records for later tax and Cayman banking questions.
Reconcile the Retirement Savings Account before departure
PenCom's current retirement-benefit guidance says access to a Retirement Savings Account is generally tied to retirement and describes limited exceptions. Moving abroad does not, by itself, create an automatic cash withdrawal, transfer, or refund. The account type, age, employment end, contribution history, voluntary contributions, and current regulation matter.
- Download the latest RSA statement and keep the PIN, PFA details, employer schedules, contribution history, beneficiary record, identity documents, and unresolved contribution queries.
- Ask the PFA in writing how foreign residence, contact details, future contributions, retirement eligibility, voluntary contributions, beneficiaries, payment details, and identity verification affect the specific account.
- Resolve missing or misallocated contributions while employer payroll records remain accessible.
- Keep Nigerian RSA, employer gratuity, private investments, life insurance, and Cayman pension obligations as separate decisions.
Order and validate the Nigerian police certificate for a real recipient
The Nigeria Police Force's Police Specialized Services Automation Project provides the official service and document-validation path for Police Character Certificates. The receiving Cayman employer, WORC, CBC, regulator, school, or other institution still controls the required country coverage, issue-date window, format, original or digital delivery, authentication, and recipient.
- Get the recipient's written specification before applying: document name, countries and periods covered, age threshold, recency, fingerprint or identity steps, original or digital format, authentication, and delivery route.
- Use the official POSSAP service and retain the application reference, payment evidence, identity submission, issued certificate, validation result, courier evidence, and recipient acceptance.
- Resolve spelling, date of birth, passport, NIN, address, and residence-period errors before the certificate is submitted elsewhere.
- Do not order so early that the certificate falls outside the recipient's live submission window.
Authenticate Nigerian documents only to the recipient's specification
Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes its document-authentication service for business, educational, and legal documents used internationally. Authentication is a chain-of-document step, not a guarantee that every Cayman recipient accepts every copy, translation, seal, age, or delivery format.
- Do not authenticate every document speculatively; obtain the current receiving instruction first.
- Keep police-certificate issuance, document authentication, translation, notarisation, certification, and Cayman acceptance as separate controls.
| Document lane | Confirm first | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Civil and family | Birth, marriage, name, custody, consent, adoption, divorce, original or certified copy, translation, and issue-date rules. | Original, certified copy, authentication reference, translation, courier, recipient, and return of originals. |
| Employment and education | Certificate, transcript, reference, professional status, direct-verification, sealed-envelope, and authentication requirements. | Issuer contact, sealed records, verification response, authentication, and delivery evidence. |
| Company and authority | Corporate records, powers of attorney, resolutions, tax or court records, signatory authority, and recipient wording. | Current extracts, signatures, authority evidence, authentication chain, and filing or delivery receipt. |
Protect passport, identity, and consular continuity
The Nigeria Immigration Service says diaspora passport applicants use the nearest Nigerian embassy, high commission, or consulate and appear for biometric capture. Renewal and correction routes can require NIN-aligned data and supporting civil records. Start before travel if validity, name, date, or identity mismatches could block airline, transit, visa, work-permit, bank, or school steps.
- Check every traveller's passport validity, blank pages, name and birth data, NIN alignment, prior passports, transit route, and future travel calendar.
- Keep birth, marriage, custody, consent, name-change, state-of-origin, and identity records accessible where they may be needed for renewal or correction.
- Identify the currently responsible Nigerian mission for Cayman and verify which passport, emergency, document, and consular services it actually provides before relying on it.
- Store secure colour scans, application references, mission contacts, and replacement instructions separately from the originals and shipped luggage.
Redesign banking, FX, BVN, and digital access before the move
A foreign address and tax residence can change Nigerian bank, card, investment, transfer, and identity-verification access. The Central Bank of Nigeria has introduced non-resident Nigerian account structures and a remote non-resident BVN platform, but those initiatives do not automatically convert an existing account or guarantee every product remains available from Cayman.
- Protect the Nigerian phone number, email, authenticator, password manager, bank token, NIN and BVN recovery path until every critical account has been tested from Cayman.
- Do not close the source account before rent, deposit, school, shipment, or property money has settled and the evidence trail has been exported.
| Money task | Confirm before acting | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Nigerian accounts | Foreign-address policy, tax self-certification, BVN and NIN data, cards, 2FA, transfer limits, fees, dormant rules, and closure consequences. | Statements, bank letters, profile confirmations, support route, and account decisions. |
| Cayman onboarding | Bank-specific identity, address, employment, permit, tax-residence, source-of-funds, reference, certification, and appointment requirements. | Passport, contract, permit evidence, references, statements, payslips, sale or business records, and self-certifications. |
| FX and transfer | Regulated provider, rate, spread, sending and receiving fees, correspondent costs, settlement, limits, recipient details, and error process. | Quote, confirmations, purpose, sending and receiving statements, and source trail. |
| First-month liquidity | Temporary housing, deposits, insurance, food, phone, transport, school, utilities, and delayed payroll contingency. | Dated cash-flow plan separating committed, quoted, and estimated amounts. |
Replace Nigerian health assumptions with Cayman evidence
The Cayman Health Insurance Commission explains employer and employee responsibilities for local health insurance. Confirm the actual insurer, exact effective date, employee and dependant premiums, exclusions, network, pre-authorisation, prescriptions, emergency and overseas care, and complaints route in writing. Do not assume a Nigerian employer plan, private policy, or travel insurance fills the Cayman gap.
| Health handoff | Questions to ask | Documents to carry |
|---|---|---|
| Cayman cover | Effective date, employer contribution, employee and dependant cost, exclusions, network, referrals, emergencies, and overseas care. | Policy schedule, membership evidence, contacts, claim instructions, and payment confirmation. |
| Nigerian closure | Employer-plan end, private-policy portability, open claims, final appointments, records access, and prescription transition. | Policy terms, claims, receipts, clinical summary, imaging, labs, referrals, and vaccination records. |
| Medication | Generic and brand names, lawful import quantity, storage, refills, Cayman prescriber needs, and pharmacy availability. | Prescription, doctor letter where appropriate, medicine list, allergies, and original labelled packaging. |
Plan housing, schools, shipping, and arrival as one system
A Cayman address affects commuting, school logistics, insurance, utilities, transport, and first-month cash. Use verified quotes and address-level checks rather than assuming the Nigerian housing, payment, school, delivery, or transport model transfers directly. If the worker, dependants, and shipment arrive on different dates, map each phase.
- Shortlist neighborhoods by the actual work and school routes, then test them at realistic travel times before choosing a lease or purchase.
- Ask schools directly about current places, year placement, admissions evidence, deposits, refund and withdrawal terms, records, uniforms, transport, and support needs.
- Inventory what will be carried, shipped, sold, stored, or bought in Cayman; compare written door-to-door scope, customs, port, storage, delivery, and insurance assumptions.
- Review Cayman Customs & Border Control's current import rules before packing food, medication, plants, animals, vehicles, restricted goods, or high-value items.
- Keep identity, immigration, employment, school, health, medication, and first-week items outside checked freight where delay would stop the move.
Run the first 90 days through evidence gates
Keep flexible commitments and a cash buffer until Nigerian records and money handoffs and Cayman immigration, insurance, housing, school, banking, and shipment milestones are real. Reconcile both countries after arrival rather than assuming the Nigerian file ended at the airport.
| Gate | Nigerian control | Cayman control |
|---|---|---|
| Before irreversible spend | Status map, employer and tax file, RSA record, police and authentication instructions, passport and account-access test. | Written visa or exemption and work-permit route, contract, insurance plan, budget, housing and school contingencies. |
| Final two weeks | Final pay and deduction evidence, bank and phone access, records export, property or business handoffs, health records, and travel documents. | Arrival accommodation, transport, payment backup, employer handoff, phone plan, essentials, and emergency contacts. |
| First month | Confirm employer, tax authority, PFA, POSSAP, MFA, NIS, bank, property, company, and adviser actions remain accessible. | Complete employer, immigration, insurance, bank, phone, transport, housing, school, healthcare, utilities, and emergency setup. |
| Days 31–90 | Reconcile tax, pension contributions, retained income, property or business, provider notices, and unresolved records. | Reconcile actual costs, payroll, pension, insurance, permits, dependants, licences, renewals, and source-of-funds records. |
Know where professional advice is essential
This page is a planning guide, not a Nigerian tax-residence conclusion, pension or benefit determination, visa or exemption decision, Cayman work-permit or landing outcome, document-authentication instruction for a specific recipient, financial recommendation, or legal opinion. Use the official sources below to frame the file, then have the relevant Nigerian and Cayman authorities or professionals confirm material decisions in writing.
- Nigerian cross-border tax and business: residence, retained income and property, employment close, entities, management, investments, trusts, estates, and continuing filings.
- Nigerian pension and document systems: RSA records, retirement access, police certificates, civil records, passport, authentication, and consular routing.
- Cayman immigration and employment: visitor visa or exemption, landing, work-permit route, permission to work, dependants, medical and police evidence, start date, job changes, and renewals.
- Banking, insurance, property, school, custody, consent, powers of attorney, and regulated transfers where the receiving institution's exact requirements control.
